Watermelon Cultivation at Dona Eco Farms:

At Dona Eco Farms, every planting season brings a new sense of excitement, and last year, we decided to grow watermelons. Watermelon, with its juicy, refreshing sweetness, is a summer staple, and growing it felt like the perfect addition to our farm’s diversity. In the cool and lush region of Koraput, February presented itself as the ideal time to sow watermelon seeds, and so began our journey of watermelon cultivation.

Choosing the Best Time and Seeds:

February in Koraput offers the perfect climate for growing watermelons. With the temperature starting to rise but still retaining some coolness, it creates the right conditions for watermelon seedlings to thrive. After discussing our plans and doing a bit of research, we were confident that starting in February would lead to a successful crop.

We sourced the best quality seeds available in the market, knowing that the right seed variety could make a significant difference in the taste, size, and overall success of the harvest. Quality seeds are the foundation of healthy fruit, and we wanted to ensure that the watermelons we grew were nothing short of exceptional.

Preparing the Land for Watermelon Farming:

Preparing the land at Dona Eco Farms for watermelon cultivation was a labor of love. We began by plowing and leveling the field, making sure the soil was loose and fertile. Watermelons thrive in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, so we added farmyard manure (FYM) to enrich the beds. The organic FYM would not only enhance the fertility of the soil but also promote healthier plant growth and improve the yield.

We raised the beds meticulously, keeping in mind the importance of good drainage and aeration. The raised beds also allowed the watermelon vines to spread freely, giving the fruit ample room to grow. We were mindful of spacing, ensuring that the watermelon seeds were sown at the proper distance to avoid overcrowding, which could hinder growth and fruit size.

Laying Out the Drip Irrigation System:

Water is crucial for watermelon cultivation, but it requires careful management. Too much or too little water can both cause problems, and we wanted to strike the perfect balance. That’s where our drip irrigation system came into play.

We laid out the drip lines with precision, ensuring every plant received an adequate and consistent supply of water. Watermelons have deep roots, and proper hydration is essential for their juicy, refreshing quality. The drip system helped us conserve water, preventing wastage while ensuring that the watermelon plants received the exact amount they needed to flourish. This was particularly important in Koraput’s climate, where water conservation is always a priority.

Every day, as we walked through the farm, we felt a sense of pride watching the plants grow. The drip system quietly delivered water to the roots, and the plants responded beautifully. Before long, tiny watermelons began to appear, and with them came a sense of accomplishment.

The First Fruits and Harvest Joy:

There’s something magical about seeing the first fruits of your labor—quite literally. As the days passed, the watermelon plants began to produce small, round fruits that grew bigger with each passing week. The bright green melons, nestled on the beds, were a sight to behold.

Harvest time was filled with excitement. The fruits were large, plump, and promised the sweetness we had hoped for. We took great joy in cutting open the first watermelon, and the burst of sweetness it delivered was everything we had envisioned. Sharing these watermelons with our family and friends was one of the most rewarding moments. There’s something special about serving food you’ve grown yourself, and we cherished every moment.

Sharing the Bounty with Others:

At Dona Eco Farms, we believe in sharing the fruits of our labor, quite literally. We enjoyed eating the watermelons ourselves, but the joy of giving fresh, home-grown fruit to family and friends was even greater. We also sold some of our harvest at a modest price of Rs. 20 per watermelon, making it accessible to the local community. The satisfaction we felt in providing healthy, delicious fruit to others was immeasurable.
